After floating under the radar for a bit of time — it premiered in the long-forgotten age of March, 2014 — the Spanish relationship drama 10,000 km (formerly known as Long Distance) has been picked up for U.S. distribution by Broad Green Pictures. This is something to celebrate, given the selection of positive reviews it’s picked up during various festival appearances, through which Carlos Marques-Marcet‘s film has been called a muscular formal exertion in service of probing the painful emotions that come with most relationships.
You’ll only catch glimpses of these (such as the 23-minute opening shot) in this preview, but what’s shown nevertheless impresses — though it’s possible that I’m just be a sucker for The Magnetic Fields. Regardless, it should boost most people’s level of interest out of non-existence, and, coupled with a day-and-date iTunes release, helps make it essential summer viewing.

Synopsis:
Alexandra and Sergi make love in their tiny Barcelona apartment. They’ve decided to have a baby, but find their plans dashed when Alex receives an offer for an artistic residency in Los Angeles. Understanding this may be Alex’s last chance to re-launch her photography career, the couple decides to put their plans on hold for a year. One year apart, with a continent between them, Alex and Sergi must rely on virtual communication to keep the flame of their relationship alive. But with their realities no longer shared and the touch of one another gone, the technology that has supposedly brought the world closer together may just tear them apart.
10,000 km will enter a limited release and hit iTunes on July 10.
