If we may avert your eyes from the new trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar for a moment, you’ll find the first look at one of my favorite Sundance films, Land Ho!. Co-directed by Martha Stephens (Pilgrim Song) and Aaron Katz (Cold Weather), the David Gordon Green-produced road trip finds Paul Eenhoorn (who gave a great performance in last year’s This is Martin Bonner) and Earl Lynn Nelson taking an Icelandic adventure.
I said in my full review, “As our aging characters reflect on life, boredom, Facebook, Jewish mysticism, and all things in between, the film blissfully rolls by, touting the importance of friendship in any period of life. As one of the best road trip comedies I’ve ever had the pleasure of taking part in, Land Ho!’s success is found in its small observations and flawless, off-beat leads. Think of it as The Trip to Iceland: The Elder Years; with that notion, I’d welcome many more adventures with our duo.” Check out the trailer below.
A pair of 60-something ex-brothers-in-law sets off on a road trip through Iceland, hoping to reclaim their youth. Their picturesque adventures, from trendy Reykjavík to the rugged outback, are a throwback to classic bawdy road comedies as well as a candid exploration of aging, loneliness, and friendship.
Land Ho! opens on July 11th, 2014.
