Summit has discovered the ultimate weapon to combat Peter Gallagher and his massive eyebrows: the power of dance! The official trailer for Step Up Revolution, the fourth film in the Step Up franchise, hit the internet tonight and since I’m the one with the most questionable movie taste on The Film Stage, I obviously got really excited about it. Thanks to the newly launched ScreenCrush for the heads up and you can see it below with my detailed analysis following.
Ever since an ex-girlfriend introduced me to the wonder and insanity of Step Up 2 The Streets many years ago, I’ve been on board with the franchise. Like I’m sure is the case with other fans, it’s not really the plot that brings me in; it’s seeing people far more talented than me bend, flip, and dance in ways that I couldn’t do even if my life depended on it (let’s hope it never does). Step Up Revolution looks to be more of the same (a central romance, the “dancing isn’t just about dancing” theme), with the addition of an 80’s teen movie-style premise (with “historic neighborhood” instead of “youth center”), but that’s exactly what I’m looking for so I’m already not let down. Plus the two leads this time around already feel like better actors so maybe the story elements won’t be as unbearable as they were in Step Up 3D. Could Step Up Revolution end up the best one of the bunch? Probably not. But it does have 100% more Peter Gallagher, so there’s promise.
Synopsis:
STEP UP REVOLUTION is the next installment in the worldwide smash STEP UP franchise, which sets the dancing against the vibrant backdrop of Miami. EMILY (Kathryn McCormick) arrives in Miami with aspirations of becoming a professional dancer and soon falls in love with SEAN (Ryan Guzman), a young man who leads a dance crew in elaborate, cutting-edge flash mobs, called “The Mob.” When a wealthy business man threatens to develop The Mob’s historic neighborhood and displace thousandsof people, Emily must band together with Sean and The Mob to turn their performance art into protest art, and risk losing their dreams to fight for a greater cause.
