After years of rumors, it looks like Hollywood’s take on Oldboy is finally jumping off the table and into production. Director Spike Lee has pulled together Josh Brolin, Sharlto Copley, Samuel L. Jackson and Elizabeth Olsen together for the film, and now he’s reaching towards one of his Red Hook Summer stars, Variety reports.
Parker, who had both Summer and Arbitrage with Richard Gere at Sundance his year — not to mention Red Tails in theaters around the same time — is in talks to play the doctor who is a colleague of Olsen’s character. The film follows a younger woman (Olsen) who helps (and soon romances) a stranger (Brolin) in his quest for revenge on a mysterious, powerful figure (Copley). While some things are said to be changed from the original, expect a wild third act.
While Park’s Red Hook role was minor, I greatly admired him in Arbitrage, which can finally be seen this month. He’s also got some more promising roles set, as he joins Rooney Mara, Ben Foster and Casey Affleck in the drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. While I’m not 100% sold on Lee taking on this project, hopefully it’s just crazy enough to work and he’s certainly got a stellar cast to deliver it.
Production kicks off this fall for a likely 2013 release.
