Deadline reports that Top Crown Productions and Likely Story have signed Rocky Russo and Jeremy Sosenko to adapt Too Cool To Be Forgotten, an adaptation of Alex Robinson‘s 2008 graphic novel. The story follows Andy Wicks, whose trip to the hypnotist to cure his addiction to cigarettes results in his being transported back to 1985 when he was 15 years old. Still with his 40 year old mind intact, Wicks has to once again navigate through the horrors of high school, and, more importantly, choose between reliving it the exact same way or righting some of the wrongs that happened — including starting to smoke in the first place. Russo and Sosenko are newcomers to the screenwriting world, with their only credit being Movie 43, an anthology of comedy shorts due out in theaters this year.
Robinson is one of my favorite graphic novelists (is that a thing? Feels weird to say) based purely on his opus Box Office Poison, which is one of the greatest graphic novels ever written (next to Craig Thompson‘s Blankets). I haven’t read Too Cool To Be Forgotten yet, but I absolutely love the plotline already, both because I’m a sucker for time travel (setting the movie in 1985 is a nice touch) and because I’m a smoker. It’s a 1-2 punch, and, for that alone, I shall remain optimistic that these two are capable enough to handle the material, despite a lack of experience. This has a ton of potential, and I’ll be following it closely.
Have you read Too Cool To Be Forgotten? Will it make for a good movie? And for comic nerds, how does it compare to Box Office Poison?
