You’ve read his pieces of filmmaking and life advice. You’ve watched his various masterclasses. Now you can officially tell your friends that your film school professor is Werner Herzog. Launching this summer and currently open for enrollment, the German director is heading up an online film course at MasterClass, available for anyone globally, amounting to over five hours spread across 20 video lessons.
According to the site, it “will focus on the art of both feature and documentary filmmaking. Herzog will teach how he captures the scary, beautiful, and spectacular. Lessons include storytelling, financing, leading a crew, cinematography, working with actors, locations, editing, and documentary interview techniques.” Clocking in at $90, it’s certainly a cut above a Netflix subscription, but as Herzog notes in the trailer below, it’s a measly price compared to the same amount of time for tuition at an average film school.
“Ultimately, my own goal is to be a good soldier of cinema and if I can inspire one or two of you out there, to become a good soldier, then I have done everything I should do here,” Herzog says. So, if you’re looking for a summer of existential pondering and cut-throat filmmaking techniques, your schedule is set. Check out the trailer below, along with some photos of Herzog enjoying himself in the studio.
