Although we got word earlier this month that Paul Thomas Anderson‘s adaptation of Inherent Vice would kick off production this spring, things were looking doubtful when we didn’t hear a peep about the project since then. Thankfully, our fears can be put to rest as PTA fan site Cigs & Red Vines have an exclusive update on the status of the film, one that should please just about everyone.
While it took our director five years to follow up There Will Be Blood, mostly due to some financing troubles, this will not be the case with his next film. Warner Bros. have reportedly come aboard to fully finance the film, instead of the rumored Annapurna Pictures (don’t worry though, the decision was “completely amicable” between the parties). We’ve also got word shooting will be kicking off this month, as our director is currently filling out his supporting cast.
Based on Thomas Pynchon‘s novel, Joaquin Phoenix is our only confirmed cast member, playing Larry “Doc” Sportello, a pot-smoking detective on a kidnapping case in 1969-1970 Los Angeles. Lastly, while Mihai Malaimare Jr. did a wonderful job shooting The Master, it will be longtime PTA collaborator Robert Elswit who will return for the gig, which is set to shoot on 35mm film. There you have it; a new PTA film should be in front of audiences by 2014 and you can check back for updates as they are likely to flood in this month.
Are you looking forward to see Elswit and PTA work together again? Does PTA working with a major studio have you excited?
