I haven’t truly looked forward to an X-Men movie since I was around ten years old, yet the cross-generational approach to X-Men: Days of Future Past has yours truly at least curious about how this installment would be pulled off. Most audiences are not even aware that a new movie is to arrive, nor that, more intriguingly, it’s to combine the many-years-absent “original” cast with 2011’s First Class lineup for some time-traveling bits of business. That’s what an old comic book would suggest, anyway.
To help push both sides of the story forward, Fox have released two posters for Bryan Singer‘s film, in which James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart, as Professor X, cross paths, along with a one-sheet that sees Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender, Magnetos alike, form their own two-faced being. It’s a fine concept, but the execution is… suspect, and hopefully something that can be improved upon in the ten months before a theatrical release.
And when we actually discuss the sequels to 2011 reboots of 20th Century Fox-backed sci-fi franchises that I’m hoping to see, there is Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, another title represented at Comic-Con over the weekend. Seen above, thus, is our first official image from the movie, Andy Serkis‘ Caesar preparing for what would appear to be combat with an enemy: humans. In a world ravished by the horrors of a mankind-killing virus, the apes are growing in numbers and wits — including speech communication — as survivors hope to reclaim their planet from the primates. This is not really evidenced in the above display — which is, in all truth, just a promotional shot of CG monkeys — but as a fan of the reboot, peeks at what’s to come are a little nice.
Here’s hoping Matt Reeves and his fine cast — the human side is led by Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, and Kodi Smit-McPhee — will keep up the momentum when Dawn of the Planet of the Apes arrives on July 18, 2014.
X-Men: Days of Future Past will open on May 23, 2014. Have a look at the posters below, as well as the full Comic-Con panel:
