Those who have seen Steve McQueen‘s striking 2008 debut Hunger should be excited to hear that the director’s follow-up effort, Shame, is rounding up quite the cast. Hunger star Michael Fassbender — who has since appeared in Inglourious Basterds and Fish Tank, and will also be seen alongside Mia Wasikowska in Jane Eyre next year — will play Shame‘s lead role, a New York-based sex addict.

The Playlist‘s report also states that Carey Mulligan, who can be seen most recently in Never Let Me Go, is likely to snag one of the film’s supporting roles. The familiar television actor James Badge Dale is circling a supporting role as well. While it isn’t certain which roles these two actors will play, The Playlist provides the following prediction:

The plot revolves around Brandon (Fassbender), a Manhattan officer worker with a hopeless sex addiction. It’s possible that Mulligan is playing Marianne, a co-worker that Brandon begins a relationship with, but it seems far more likely that she’s playing Sissy, his troubled sister, a blues singer who comes to stay for a few days. Meanwhile, Badge Dale’s likely to play David, Brandon’s boss.

We know too that the film will begin shooting in January, and is aiming to be released internationally by Momentum before the end of 2011. Both Fassbender (Jane Eyre, A Dangerous Method) and Mulligan (Drive) have other 2011 films on their slate, which should serve to increase the anticipation for Shame even more.
