One’s big, one’s small, but both hold much promise for cinephiles all over the world. Two international directors, the Australian Baz Luhrmann and the German Tom Tykwer, have distributors for their respective films. Mind you, Luhrmann’s hasn’t started production while Tykwer’s is finished and ready for packaging.

Luhrmann’s much-hyped (and possibly three-dimensional) The Great Gatsby, starring Leo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, is being courted by Warner Bros, who’ll finance and provide worldwide distribution the project. The script comes courtesy of Lurhmann and Craig Pearce, who has writing credits on Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge! – all Lurhmann projects. The film will be produced by Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher of Red Wagon, as well as Luhrmann, Catherine Martin and Catherine Knapman of Luhrmann/Bazmark Films. G Mac Brown‘s (Australia, Somewhere) also on board with a producing credit. One is praying for a non-stingy, wide-as-can-be release and the kind of financial success that was not found for Australia.  [Deadline]

Meanwhile, Tykwer’s Three will find theaters via Strand Releasing. The film premiered at the Venice FIlm Festival last year and had screening at TIFF as well. Strand is planning a late summer release. [IndieWire]

The German director hasn’t been noticed much recently, garnering only mediocre reviews from his last two efforts (Perfume and The International). Hopefully this will be a return to form for the man who gave us Run, Lola, Run and Heaven.

Do you know Tykwer’s work? Excited for Lurhmann’s Gatsby?
