One of our favorite indie dramas of the last few years is Natural Selection, a small-scale project that premiered at SXSW. Four years later, director Robbie Pickering is now back with his follow-up, this time going the Hollywood route with Sony Pictures’ genre mash-up Freaks of Nature, previously titled The Kitchen Sink.
Having begun production well over two years, after a few delays, it’s now set to land in two short weeks with a cast featuring Mackenzie Davis, Ed Westwick, Vanessa Hudgens, Keegan-Michael Key, Joan Cusack, Bob Odenkirk, Denis Leary, Cerina Vincent, and Patton Oswalt. When one sets up vampires, humans and zombies to fight each other, it’ll certainly be chaotic but this looks a bit tonally all over the place. We’ll find out if it’s worth seeing soon, and in the meantime, one can find the trailer below.
In Freaks of Nature, we welcome you to Dillford, where three days ago, everything was peaceful and business as usual: the vampires were at the top of the social order, the zombies were at the bottom, and the humans were getting along in the middle. But this delicate balance was ripped apart when the alien apocalypse arrived in Dillford and put an end to all the harmony. Now it’s humans vs. vampires vs. zombies in all-out, blood-sucking, brain-eating, vamp-staking mortal combat – and all of them are on the run from the aliens. It is up to three teenagers – one human, one vampire, and one zombie – to team up, figure out how to get rid of the interplanetary visitors, and try to restore order to this “normal” little town.
Freaks of Nature opens on October 30th.
