Relativity is really getting the jump on Universal. The studios have separate dueling Snow White projects and the former has already put out their first ad to announce production beginning. After Universal pushed up their Snow White and the Huntsman from December 2012 to June 2012, Relativity set Tarsem‘s untitled Snow White project starring Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, and Lilly Collins to March 16th, 2012, up from its late June release. And now, with production starting on Monday, Coming Soon has uncovered the first ad for the film that appeared in The Hollywood Reporter.
There isn’t much to gather, except for director Tarsem‘s luscious visual style. After waiting years for his masterpiece The Fall to hit theaters here, it is hard to imagine we’ll be getting two feature films from him in the span of few months, as his actioner Immortals hits this November. That film stars Superman: Man of Steel himself Henry Cavill, along with Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Freida Pinto, Luke Evans, Kellan Lutz, John Hurt, and Mickey Rourke. As for his Snow White project, check out a synopsis below, in between the promo images.
In Relativity’s Untitled Snow White starring Oscar®-winner Julia Roberts and breakout star Lilly Collins (The Blind Side), an evil Queen (Roberts) steals control of a kingdom, and an exiled princess (Collins) enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright in a spirited adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance, and betrayal that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over. The film also stars Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as the object of their affection, Prince Andrew Alcott, and Nathan Lane (The Birdcage) as the hapless and bungling servant to the Queen.
Coming Soon also gathered some details on the project while at the Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas. They were shown concept art that “seems to draw from a wide range of inspiration, including a very Indian-looking palace and several masquerade designs reminiscent of Mardi Gras and old storybook illustrations.” Check out more details below.
Multiple costume parties are said to play a role in the film and promise to be extremely bright and colorful. Against them, the Prince (Armie Hammer) is seen in a coat and tales costume with (for the party) rabbit ears emerging from his top hat. Snow White herself (Lilly Collins) is the biggest departure from the original story and will be portrayed as a bit of a fighter, allowing for multiple action sequences. Exiled from her kingdom, she’s actively trying to win back her rightful throne and combines a blue dress with black, leather armor. Each of the film’s seven dwarfs features a distinctive look and seems to be nicknamed by their costume. “Cowboy” wears a cowboy hat, “Wolf” is draped in animal skin and another wears a crooked top hat. The Evil Queen (Julia Roberts) takes the cake for costume changes. Her character had pages and pages of different elaborate dresses in various colors and shapes, including an impressive ice-inspired design.
Tarsem‘s untitled Snow White project hits theaters on March 16th, 2012 while his Immortals will come out on November 11th, 2011. Universal’s dueling project Snow White and the Huntsman starring Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth hits theaters June 1st, 2012.
