It seems like Sawyer did find a life off the island after all, one full of some 3D break-dancing. After a guest spot on Community and a small role in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Lost‘s Josh Holloway is back in the lead, this time as a coach of a B-boying team looking to win the world championship in the new film Battle of the Year: The Dream Team. Check out the trailer below courtesy of Sony, coming from director Benson Lee, firmly staying in the same genre after Planet B-Boy.
The film looks honestly like the Step Up franchise meets every sports drama film known to mankind. Dancers will no doubt be thrilled to see more modern choreography featured on the big screen, which means that this film could end up being a financial success in “eye-popping 3-D.” The lines present here are nothing new in terms of sports drama scripting unfortunately. As far as actors go, Holloway blew me away in Lost and definitely appears to be channeling the same rough-around-the-edges spark that made him so wonderful as the resident badass on the Island. Josh Peck (Drake and Josh, The Wackness, the Ice Age films) has come far from his teenybopper Nickelodeon days and I’m interested to see what he has to offer. But the trailer doesn’t inspire much confidence, especially with Chris Brown providing dismay in his choice of hair color. Like many other January releases, unless other trailers change my mind, this is firmly on our avoid list.
Synopsis:
Battle of the Year is the Olympics of break dancing, a tournament held every year that attracts all the best teams from around the world, but the Americans haven’t won in fifteen years. Los Angeles Hip Hop mogul and former B-Boy Dante (Alonso) wants to put the country that started the Sport back on top. He enlists his hard-luck friend Blake (Holloway), who was a championship basketball coach, to coach his team. Armed with the theory that the right coach can make any team champions, they assemble a Dream Team of all the best b-boys across the country. With only three months until Battle of the Year, Blake has to use every tactic he knows to get twelve talented individuals to come together as a team if they’re going to bring the Trophy back to America where it started. Inspired by the actual World championship held yearly in France.
Battle of the Year: The Dream Team also stars Laz Alonso (Jumping the Broom, Avatar) and will hit theaters on January 25th, 2013.
