The question begs…is this a step we really see the director taking? After Zack Snyder got the Superman directing gig last night, Aronofsky’s name was crossed off the shortlist.
It’s not the only superhero film list he was on though, as we reported late August. Deadline is updating that the Black Swan director has officially entered talks with 20th Century Fox to direct X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2.
It almost seems like a joke, but after taking on a silly-sounding “ballerina thriller,” it ended up being my current favorite film of the year. Right now, Aronofsky has “recently met with Fox chief Tom Rothman to be sure he would get the kind of creative controls to which he is accustomed.” After working with Hugh Jackman on The Fountain and garnering the best performance that actor has given to date, they have a close relationship. Right now it is between Twilight: Eclipse‘s David Slade and Aronofsky, so we will find out soon who gets the gig.
UPDATE: Vulture also reports Aronofsky has been offered Tales From The Gangster Squad by WB, the project Ben Affleck was circling last week. Affleck has passed and now Aronofsky has top choice. They say he is much more interested in Wolvie 2 though.
Wolverine 2 is shooting in Japan, and Jackman recently stated that production would start March/April 2011.
Do you think Aronofsky will realistically take the job?
