Back in 2006, when a crazy technology called “digital projection” was entering some movie theater markets and a young Illinois senator seriously considered a Presidential run — not that these two are explicitly connected — the Toronto International Film Festival was screening All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, a horror picture starring newcomer Amber Heard that had been directed by first-time feature helmer Jonathan Levine. Buzz was good, and little about the film seemed too esoteric for an audience.
But us Americans are only receiving Mandy Lane in 2013 — blame the financial troubles of other companies, thank Radius-TWC — and some hype which may have built in such a length of time could, I think, be problematic for what appears to (otherwise) be a respectfully modest work. A new trailer — as opposed to, say, another that had been put on YouTube in January of 2008 — is tight and effective, selling this project as the kind of down and dirty item we don’t often see accomplished nowadays, all of which is to say nothing of the curiosity it engenders for containing the early, previously unseen efforts of a talented actor-director pairing. Must we expect much else? No. What’s here should provide its own special pleasures.

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane will arrive on VOD September 6, followed by a limited theatrical opening on October 11.
Does the preview leave up to the nearly decade-long wait?
