Based on the bestselling novel by Helen Fielding, 2001’s Bridget Jones’s Diary starring Renée Zellweger became an international smash hit, grossing over 200 million worldwide. It was followed by a sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, in 2004 which still made a good chunk of money but was looked upon in a less than favorable light. But it looks like two movies just weren’t enough to tell Bridget Jones’s story; EW has reported that a third movie based around the fussy British writer with guy issues is being put into development by Working Title Films, who produced the first two movies.

In regards to a possible plot, series co-star Colin Firth, an interview with EW’s Dave Karger last year, gave some hints involving Jones and his character of Mark Darcy being unable to conceive so she goes back with huckster Daniel (Hugh Grant) in order to get pregnant. Naturally Daniel treats her like trash, so Mark comes back in to save her from herself, because a woman can only be rescued by a man and not by her own self. This isn’t 100% official, though, in regards to either the movie or Fielding’s upcoming third novel which she’s currently writing. She’s hinted that the third movie and her third book, both of which she’s heavily involved with, may be two different entities.

Last we heard, Bridesmaids director Paul Feig was in talks to helm the project. Could this recent update be due to the massive success of that summer comedy or is just a coincidence? EW provides no details but with Working Title kicking up pre-production, we’ll find out soon.
