Curiously absent from the fall film festival slate is the World War II drama Suite Française, but then again, The Weinstein Company seems to be putting all of their eggs in The Imitation Game basket. Thankfully we’ll be seeing the project, starring Michelle Williams, Matthias SchoenaertsKristin Scott Thomas and Sam Riley, sooner than expected, as it’ll be hitting U.K. theaters early next year and today the first trailer has arrived.

Directed by Saul Dibb (The Duchess) and based on the Irene Nemirovsky novel, Williams stars as Lucile, a French woman who begins forming romantic interest in Bruno (Schoenaerts), the German soldier staying in her home as Nazi forces take hold of her native country. An unlikely bond is threatened when Lucile’s mother-in-law (Thomas) gets in the way. The trailer showcases an elegant period piece and for those not interested in the brutality found in something like Fury, this romantic approach from the same era should do the trick. Check it out below as we await a U.S. release date.

Set in 1940s France and based on the international best-selling work of Irène Némirovsky, SUITE FRANÇAISE follows beautiful Lucile Angellier who awaits news from her husband, a prisoner of war whilst leading a stifled existence with her domineering mother-in-law. When Parisian refugees pour into their small town, soon followed by a regiment of German soldiers who take up residence in the villagers’ homes, Lucile’s life is turned upside down. In the Angellier home, Lucile initially tries to ignore Bruno, the handsome and refined German officer who has been posted to live with them. But soon, a powerful love draws them together and traps them in the tragedy of war.
