With so many blockbusters interested in perpetually hitting the audience over the head with their massive CG budgets, it looks like something refreshing is right around the corner. “[If] you throw everything you can at the screen, you’ve got nowhere else to go,” Gareth Edwards recently said after a screening of his blockbuster Godzilla, courtesy of Vulture. For those expecting a non-stop monster extravaganza, the director said that he looked at the structure of films such as Jurassic Park, Alien and Jaws as a model for when to reveal the goods.
He went on to say he doesn’t want to “frustrate the audience, but to tease them. It’s kind of like cinematic foreplay.” Warner Bros. still has to reveal something ahead of time and after a few effective trailers, they’ve now unloaded a batch of clips and stills that one should likely only watch if you’re still on the fence. However, we do have eleven minutes of behind-the-scenes footage of Edwards at work, with many more resources than his debut Monsters. Check out everything below.
Godzilla hits theaters on May 16th.
