Last fall we got our first look at Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara gallivanting with Terrence Malick on what was later found out to be just a test shoot on his film formerly titled Lawless, also starring Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Natalie Portman and whoever else wanders on set. But now it’s time for the real deal.
The director, who just premiered To the Wonder at TIFF (our full review), has recently wrapped up production on Knight of Cups (which also stars Bale and Portman, and only has the elusive logline of “a story of a man, temptations, celebrity, and excess.”). Taking no breaks, production kicked off a few weeks ago on Austin on his next project.
Just Jared has the first set photos, which feature possibly the best picture of the Badlands director yet (see above), as well as others of Mara and Gosling driving, walking dogs, standing on bridges and more. So far we only know the film follows “two intersecting love triangles” and tells a “story of sexual obsession and betrayal set against the music scene in Austin, Texas.”
There’s word that Bale and Portman are also in town, but Malick seems to be locking them away from the paparazzi for now. In the meantime, we can simply wait for more distribution news on Wonder, but it’s nice to know that Malick is progressing along with his next project. Check out a batch of photos below.

One of the most highly anticipated films of the Cannes Film Festivals was unveiled this morning to a divisive response, Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Only God Forgives. With this year’s Cannes Film Festival halfway done, one of the clear highlights is Coens‘ 1960′s-set folk music tale Inside Llewyn Davis.
