While one can’t seem to bring up Dave Chappelle without discussing the sudden ending of his hit show, there never seemed to be much of a mystery to me. Already well-off, he was clearly unhappy with the attention and behind-the-scenes nonsense that goes with having one television’s most popular show. To take a deeper look at his early days and what led to his success, a two-hour documentary has arrived.
Brandon Farley‘s Dave Chappelle: The 50 Million Dollar Question, initially released last year, but resurfacing on Vimeo, is a found-footage project that pulls from a variety of sources to tell as a comprehensive a story as possible. Primarily using longtime collaborator Neal Brennan‘s interview with Joe Rogan and Chappelle’s Inside the Actors Studio episode, the lack of new information means no easy answers are given, but its exhaustive approach makes for a valuable portrait of unbridled talent struggling with success.
