It was thought that a live-action adaptation of 2006 animated film Paprika was up next for Wolfgang Petersen, however it now appears that sci-fi tale Uprising will in fact be the director’s latest project.

Uprising will portray Earth after an alien invasion, with the extra-terrestrials running the world. Speaking to MTV, Petersen said:

“It’s a very big budget movie and also it’s a very unusual sci-fi concept because it shows the world being actually run by aliens that come to us — and not necessarily to destroy, but to organize and reorganize our lives, and to see how we react to that now”

Petersen is of course no stranger to large budgets and while Troy produced fairly healthy box-office receipts, Poseidon was disappointing both commercially and critically. There is also the spectre of that certain other big-budget film about aliens ruling Earth, which looms large.

Although Petersen hasn’t officially recognized it himself, Uprising could be potentially construed as having political overtones in it’s subject material. It would be interesting to see whether he could put a Paul Verhoeven-spin on the film.

What do you think of the planned Uprising? Are you more excited for this or Paprika?
