This year’s Toronto International Film Festival may have received big-name premieres from widely-recognized talent, but for our money (sorry) the most accomplished feature that premiered there was Pedro Costa’s Horse Money. The latest drama from the Portuguese filmmaker marks his follow-up to the Fontainhas trilogy and today we have a new international trailer and extensive conversation with the helmer, conducted while stopping by New York Film Festival.

We said in our review, “Even though this film carries over some of the characters, the Fontainhas trilogy remains its own entity, as Horse Money comes as something entirely new, with all traces of the docu-fiction labels thrown toward In Vanda’s Room and Colossal Youth vanishing. Instead, Horse Money is likely the Costa film that best exemplifies the influence of classical Hollywood genre cinema on his work, with both the ghostly hospital where Ventura resides and the looming hell-tunnel he frequently travels feeling like they came straight out of a Jacques Tourneur or Fritz Lang film.”

Check out the trailer and the 75-minute conversation below:

Horse Money will be released next year by Cinema Guild.
