One of the best, and most violent, surprises of the year in the action genre was Gareth Evans‘ beat-em-up The Raid: Redemption. Even making a spot on our year-end rundown, we won’t have to wait long for some more Indonesian rampage, as Evans is gearing up for production on a sequel and we’ve got some new details today.
Titled Berandal, Evans took to Twitter to reveal a little bit about the timeline of this sequel. If you’ve seen the original, you know the self-contained nature of story, taking place almost entirely in a crime-infested apartment building and (spoilers) ending not far from it. It looks like our main group won’t be getting any sort of break, as Evans revealed the first scene of this follow-up takes place a mere two hours after the first film ends.
Although no plot details are mentioned, we can expect a lot more action as Twitch also chimes in with some of the additional cast. Star Iko Uwais will be returning, while Julie Estelle (Macabre) will play the already teased Hammer Girl and Merantau villain Alex Abbad, Marsha Timothy, Mathias Muchus, Tio Pakusadewo and Arif Rahman will fill out the rest of the major roles. While the bulk of those names certainly don’t include any A-listers, its nice to see Evans has gone with talent over star power for this follow-up.
Are you looking forward to The Raid sequel?
