Released last year after a long delay, Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon‘s twisty horror project The Cabin in the Woods was one of the highlights of 2012. Netting a modest $42 million at the domestic box-office, some fans hoped we’d see more of the many possibilities in this universe, although (spoilers) the end was about as finite as finales get. Fear not, your prayers to the Gods have now been answered, but not in the way one might expect.
According to Zap2it (via Movies.com), Universal Orlando’s theme park will be launching an official The Cabin in the Woods attraction for their forthcoming Halloween Horror Nights. Michael Aiello, who is part of the team bringing it to life, opened up about the planned immersive experience, saying, “We are building the cabin completely. You’re going to walk through a forest to get there. You’re going into the cabin. You’re going to go into the cube cells. We’re literally taking everything we can in the film and giving you a kind of best-of montage of the film with this kind of linking story.”
He adds that this new storyline, running side by side with the one in the film, will put the audience in the control room as newly hired member of the organization. One will get a first-hand experience on training videos while waiting in line before heading into the maze, which includes sacrifices and horrifying creatures (opting for real-life actors rather than animatronics, also featuring some new characters). While Goddard has a hand in the script for this upcoming spin-off of sorts, we likely won’t be getting any sort of prequel/sequel film, but one can stream the original film on Netflix as we await to see how this attraction turns out.
The maze runs from September 20th to November 2nd, only in Universal Orlando, and one can see more info here.
