If What We Do in the Shadows is currently proving how well New Zealand can do comedy, The Dead Lands looks to show off the country’s action chops. Directed by Toa Fraser, the action epic premiered last fall at Toronto International Film Festival and ahead of a release this spring, a new red band trailer has arrived.
Taking place in a pre-colonial New Zealand, we follow a teenager who embarks on revenge after his tribe has been slaughtered. Considering we don’t have another entry of The Raid franchise this year, this one might do the trick for those in need of some thrills. Check out the red band trailer and poster below for the film starring James Rolleston (Boy), Lawrence Makoare, Te Kohe Tuhaka, Xavier Horan, Raukura Turei, and Rena Owen.
Hongi (James Rolleston) – a Maori chieftain’s teenage son – must avenge his father’s murder in order to bring peace and honour to the souls of his loved ones after his tribe is slaughtered through an act of treachery. Vastly outnumbered by a band of villains, led by Wirepa (Te Kohe Tuhaka), Hongi’s only hope is to pass through the feared and forbidden Dead Lands and forge an uneasy alliance with the mysterious Warrior (Lawrence Makoare), a ruthless fighter who has ruled the area for years.
The Dead Lands hits VOD and theaters on April 17th.
