Back in August we got a grainy glimpse of Baz Luhrmann’s next film The Great Gatsby. But those shots revealed little more than a super swanky classic car. Now that production has begun in earnest, we’ve landed a look (thanks to Just Jared) at the film’s stars (Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan) in costume as they stroll through Sydney, Australia’s Centennial Park.
The first image offers a pretty clear picture of DiCaprio in full Gatsby (as in Jay Gatsby) regalia. And while I was initially irked by his casting (I’ve come to expect only two expressions from latter-day DiCaprio: bewildered and enraged), I’m encouraged by this image. As a devoted fan of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s required-reading novel, I feared that Luhrmann’s take on the material would be too grandiose and gaudy, which I worried would undermine the novel’s melancholy and distrust of money/luxury. But I have to say, this is almost exactly as I imagined Jay Gatsby, so I’m more than pleasantly surprised with DiCaprio’s look.
However, less encouraging is Maguire’s attire as Nick Carraway, the novel’s narrator and stoic observer of Gatsby and Daisy’s tortured love affair. This looks less period-era and more hipster uniform. I mean, were people donning skinny-jeans in the Jazz Age?
And lastly we see Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, a casting decision I feel is dead-on as Mulligan’s talents should be able to expertly capture the complicated nature of this crush-inducing golden girl. I like this look overall, but hate the ruffles. But maybe they look absolutely stellar in 3D… Seriously, why is this movie going to be in 3D?
The Great Gatsby will hit theaters its entire 3D extravaganza December 25, 2012.
What go you think of this glimpse of The Great Gatsby?
