With its comparatively entertaining script, Shane Black‘s Iron Man 3 was one of the few worthwhile entries into the Marvel canon and while a great deal of its box office success can be attributed to The Avengers effect, we’d like to think at least a portion of it is due to its fun factor. As it prepares to cross the $1 billion mark before the week’s over, we’ve now got news on where one of its writers will be headed.
Staying in the Hollywood sequel grind, The Hollywood Reporter lets us know that co-writer Drew Pearce has come aboard Paramount’s Ghotocol follow-up Mission: Impossible 5. While details are scarce, Tom Cruise will obviously be returning as Ethan Hunt and his Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie is expected to reteam for this project. We actually have a rough production timeline too, as the studio is aiming for a fall start after Cruise finishes work on Guy Ritchie‘s The Man From U.N.C.L.E this summer.
As for as Pearce’s Robert Downey Jr.-led superhero project, much of the fun was derived from what we’d assumingly attribute to Black’s involvement, so let’s hope Pearce can prove himself on his own with this project. We’ll see another preview of Pearce’s work in Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim this summer and if a fall start date for the next Mission is indeed in the cards, expect many more updates in the coming months.
