Kicking off tomorrow, it’s quite easy for a film to get lost in the bustling line-up that is Toronto International Film Festival. With around 300 feature films spread out over 10 days, it’s simply not possible for one person, let alone an entire publication to cover it all. But we’re here today to highlight some new materials from a few films on our radar, to hopefully encourage one to do the same.
First up, the debut footage from Kelly Reichardt’s Meek’s Cutoff follow-up has landed in the form of a clip. Then we’ve got the first trailer for Attila Marcel, the live-action debut of Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville, The Illusionist), sadly without subtitles at this time. Also featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Joel Edgerton‘s next dramas, Errol Morris‘ upcoming Rumsfeld doc and more, check out everything below, along with a synopsis for each film.
Night Moves – Clip
Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Saarsgard star as radical environmental activists whose act of eco-terror plunges them into a moral maelstrom, in the highly anticipated new film from acclaimed American auteur Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy, Meek’s Cutoff).
Attila Marcel – International Trailer
Director Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville, The Illusionist) invokes memories of Buster Keaton and Jacques Tati in his first live-action film, about a mute, sweet-natured man-child whose reawakened childhood memories unleash marvellous musical fantasies.
Felony – Clip
Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby) scripts and stars in this thriller about a decorated cop whose attempt to hide his complicity in a traffic accident makes him the target of a dogged investigator (Jai Courtney).
Half of a Yellow Sun – Clip
Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave, Children of Men) and Thandie Newton (Crash, The Pursuit of Happyness) star in this epic chronicle of family ties and war from celebrated Nigerian playwright Biyi Bandele.
The Unknown Known – Clip
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Errol Morris (The Fog of War, Standard Operating Procedure) continues his exploration of post-9/11 American imperialism with this riveting, feature-length interview with notorious former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
We Gotta Get Out of This Place – Clip
First-time feature directors Simon and Zeke Hawkins tip their hat to pulp crime master Jim Thompson in this tight, twisty, Texas-set nouveau noir about three teenage friends who get in way over their head when they cross a down-home crime syndicate.
TIFF 2013 kicks off on September 5th.
