Whether you consider her a tenet of the form or regularly burn copies of I Lost it at the Movies, no one with a serious interest in film criticism would try dismissing Pauline Kael’s importance. Given the shadow her oeuvre still casts, it was just a matter of time before someone got around to making a documentary on her life and influence; given the climate in which cinema currently exists, it only makes sense that said documentary is also turning towards crowd-funding.
So it goes with Rob Garver‘s What She Said: The Art of Pauline Kael, which is using Kickstarter to seek $75,000 for the purpose of covering post-production costs. This seems like an instance where it’ll be worth an effort, given the promise of including “little-seen film and television footage, audio, personal notes and photographs found in Pauline Kael’s archives at the Lilly Library at Indiana University.” And major figures were willing to lend their time: the Kickstarter video either features or promises Quentin Tarantino, Paul Schrader, Francis Ford Coppola, David O. Russell, Alec Baldwin, John Boorman, Robert Towne, and, of course, numerous film critics. As far as upcoming documentaries go, this one might hew closest to your interests.
