Looking back at the summer there were only a few films that seemed to match utter spectacle with a halfway decent story around it — those examples likely being The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises by most accounts. But in 2013, hopefully we can count on director Guillermo Del Toro to balance both sides with great results.

While no look at our monsters yet, we do have some new images from his sci-fi epic Pacific Rim thanks to the latest issue of Empire Magazine. We get the best reveal yet of its transformed Toronto location, with what looks to be created with extensive detail. There’s also a look as some destruction aftermath, as well Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba. Check them out above and below, while we wait for a teaser later this year, hopefully with the project Del Toro abandoned, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Synopsis:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman also star in Pacific Rim, which will hit on July 12th, 2013.
