After being rumored for many, many years, as of today, a biopic surrounding rap icons N.W.A. has officially been confirmed. Universal Pictures announced they’ve picked up the rights to Straight Outta Compton, which will bow on August 14, 2015 (a spot previously held by the next Bourne film, which now moves to July 15th, 2016).
Unveiled in a first look photo, we can see the founding members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, along with their counterparts, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Corey Hawkins, respectively, as well as Jason Mitchell (playing the late Eazy-E). Coming from director F. Gary Gray (whose pictured in the middle), we hope this project is elevated beyond mere hagiography, so while one waits a year for production to conclude, check out the still and synopsis below.
In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.
