After a handful of years with little activity in the feature filmmaking world, outside of a few attachments here and there, Michael Mann is finally plotting his return. The director was recently spotted in China, scouting locations and securing a local cast in the thriller that puts Chris Hemsworth in a world of cyber threats and attacks. Co-written with Morgan Davis Foehl, the film is said to follow Balkan hacker operating out of a south Asian country, with an American and Chinese task force in pursuit.
We’ve now got another addition to the cast, as Deadline reports Viola Davis has joined the production in an unknown role. They also gave a name to the currently untitled project, simply titling it Cyber, but since retracted, so we’ll have to wait and see what Mann goes will. Thankfully, it shouldn’t be long, as production kicks off in China in May for a likely 2014 release.
Moving over to a film that is met with much less enthusiasm, for some reason Hollywood is trying to get a reboot of The Crow to fly again, despite a myriad of talent continually departing in various stages of development.
The Wrap now reports that Tom Hiddleston is the latest hat to be thrown in the ring for the role of Eric Draven, a man who was murdered and gets a chance to return to bring justice to his killers. Famously starring Brandon Lee, the original 1994 film was directed by Alex Proyas and was also based on James O’Barr comic book series.
With Hiddleston crafting a promising career in the last few years, it pains us to see him even consider such an unnecessary project in his non-Avengers time — especially when he could be doing work akin to The Deep Blue Sea. Coming from director F. Javier Gutierrez, let’s hope a surprise is in store when production begins this fall.
Do you want to see Hiddleston take the role? What do you think about Davis joining Mann’s thriller?
