Update: The Hollywood Reporter states that David O. Russell and Vince Vaughn have completely dropped out, leaving only Wahlberg. Check out the original story below.

File this one under obvious possible casting. It seems like every project The Fighter director David O. Russell has been attached to also has his star Mark Wahlberg attached. There was The Silver Lining Playbook, Uncharted: Drake’s Uncharted, a narrative version of Cocaine Cowboys, and there is always the oft-rumored sequel to his 2010 boxing drama. The latest is the “light-hearted” actioner 2 Guns. [Variety]

David O. Russell was circling the project earlier this year to rewrite a draft and possibly direct with Vince Vaughn attached, but now Wahlberg has also come aboard. Based on the graphic novel by Steven Grant and Mat Santolouco, Amazon expands on the plot below.

A pulp story about cops and thieves and the men that are something in between. Trench has targeted a local bank to rob, and asked Steadman in on the job. Trench figures it’s a great way to score — considering it’s a cover for mob money. They’ll be thieves ripping off thieves. But what Steadman doesn’t know is that Trench is a DEA agent. And what Trench doesn’t know is that Steadman’s a Naval Intelligence officer. They’re both cops! And neither one knows that they’re not robbing the mob, they’ve been set up to steal $50 million from the CIA! A light-hearted crime romp in the vein of Ocean’s Thirteen and The Italian Job from comics legend, Steven Grant!

It sounds like a fun project with Oscars not in mind, something I’d like to see the duo do now that we aren’t getting Uncharted from them. As for Mark Wahlberg, he’ll be seen in the thriller Contraband next March while his comedy Ted lands in July.

What do you think about this project for Wahlberg? Will it actually come to fruition unlike the other possible O. Russell collaborations?
