One of the best discussions leading up the Oscar ceremony each year is Jeff Goldsmith‘s annual chat with the respective Best Screenplay nominees, both on the adapted and original side. While the Alex Garland, and Nick Hornby couldn’t make it this year, Charles Randolph (The Big Short), Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies), Phyllis Nagy (Carol), Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), Josh Cooley (Inside Out), Drew Goddard (The Martian), Emma Donoghue (Room), Josh Singer (Spotlight), Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) all gathered for the 9th annual discussion.

Spanning over 1.5 hours, they discuss many aspects of writing, including breaking into the business, their biggest struggles with their respective scripts, the research that went into the projects, and in perhaps the funniest section, what they would change about the other’s screenplays. For both aspiring and seasoned screenwriters, it’s an essential chat, and one check it out below or on iTunes, which includes many individual extensive conversations with the nominees.
