While our official review won’t arrive until the embargo is lifted at the end of the week, I was allowed to give some brief thoughts on Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s The Revenant after last week’s first screening, saying that it’s a classical revenge/survival story buoyed by Emmanuel Lubezki‘s idyllic touch. Brutality often swallows emotion, yet the drama is compelling in its excess.
With still nearly a month to go until it actually lands in theaters in a limited capacity, today now brings new footage and images for the film Leonardo DiCaprio calls “the most difficult” he has “ever done.” This can be glimpsed at in a new Japanese trailer as well as a new TV spot which, aside from the opening, is wordless. Along with new images, behind-the-scene peeks, and For Your Consideration ads, check out everything below and return for our review.
Inspired by true events, THE REVENANT is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption. THE REVENANT is directed and co-written by renowned filmmaker, Academy Award® winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, Babel).
The Revenant opens on December 25th and expands wide on January 8th, 2016.
