Yes, there will be non-Terrence Malick-directed films at the Berlin Film Festival this year. The first one out of the gate at the prestigious festival will be the latest film from Elegy director Isabel Coixet, Nobody Wants the Night. Starring Juliette Binoche, Rinko Kikuchi, Gabriel Byrne, and Matt Salinger, there’s no word on a U.S. release yet, but ahead of a premiere, the first trailer has arrived.
The true story recounts the events of a woman and her significant other, an Arctic adventurer, who brave the elements and after an accident, she meets a younger woman and they bond. Some of the sound design is a bit strange in the first trailer, but it looks like a well-captured tale featuring the great talents of Binoche and Kikuchi. Check out the trailer below thanks to Twitch.
Josephine Peary is a mature, proud, determined and naive woman, in love with celebrated Arctic adventurer Robert Peary, a man who prefers glory and ice to the comforts of an upper-class home. For him she will face all danger, even risk her own life. Another woman, young but wise, brave and humble – Allaka – is in love with the same man, and expecting his child. The relentless icy landscape both separates and draws these two women together during the long, tense wait for the man they both love in such different ways.
Nobody Wants the Night is a story replete with the passion, dignity and strength of these two women as they battle to survive in one of the most inhospitable places on earth.
Nobody Wants the Night will premiere at Berlin 2015 and is seeking U.S. distribution.
