I was pretty upset at the thought of one of my favorite children’s books, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs being adapted into a film, but that turned out quite well. Another one of my favorites, Harold and the Purple Crayon is being developed, Pajiba reports. The project was originally with Spike Jonze, who brought Where The Wild Things Are to life. But that fell apart a long time ago which you can read in a heavily detailed report on /Film. Short story is that Tristar canceled the production two months before principal photography because “new bosses didn’t get Spike’s vision.” Now the project is alive again with Josh Klausner (Date Night, Shrek the Third) working on the script. The tone is being compared to A Neverending Story and will be produced by Maurice Sendak, author of Where The Wild Things Are and mentor to Crockett Johnson, author of Harold.

Count me excited. I would love to see this brought to life. I wish Jonze would direct, but it doesn’t seem like a possibility now.

Do you want to see a Harold and the Purple Crayon film? Who should direct?
