The horror world welcomed some new blood last year when writer-director Joe Begos premiered his first feature Almost Human in the Midnight Madness section at TIFF. Not long after, IFC Midnight snapped up the rights to the sci-fi creeper at Fantastic Fest, where critics lauded the film as a well-crafted homage to 1980s genre flicks. As the film prepares to hit theater next month, a trailer and poster were released to showcase the low budget film’s throwback appeal.

The film follows its protagonist Seth (Graham Skipper) after he witnesses the mysterious abduction of his friend Mark (Josh Ethier). Two years later, a rash of murders plague their small town, and Seth suspects that Mark is somehow responsible. The backwater setting, coupled with the many shotgun and ax related deaths, point to a sort of rural Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Philip Kaufman’s 1978 remake, not the original), with additional influence from John Carpenter’s The Thing and slasher movies. Based on the trailer alone, audiences looking for a scary time are sure to embrace this promising debut. See trailer, courtesy of Shock Til You Drop, and poster below:

Synopsis:

Two years ago, Mark disappeared from his home in a brilliant flash of light. His friend Seth was the last person to see him alive. Now, a string of murders leads Seth to believe that Mark is back.

Almost Human hits select theaters, VOD and iTunes on Feb. 21st.
