The long-delayed, controversial drama 3 Generations (once titled About Ray) from writer-director Gaby Dellal will finally arrive this summer, and now The Weinstein Company has released a new trailer. The story follows Ray (Elle Fanning), who begins to transition from female to male, while also dealing with familial strife and coming-of-age. Her mother (Naomi Watts) is going through her own transition from living in an apartment attached to her mother’s (Susan Surandon) and Ray’s father, who is less-than-thrilled about Ray’s life trajectory.
Shot back in 2014 and now finally seeing a release, back at TIFF in 2015, we said in our review, “I expected an everyone-supports-Ray fluff piece and was therefore pleasantly surprised Dellal and cowriter Nikole Beckwith instead delivered an authentic familial drama that’s universal no matter its wild relationship machinations.” While the marketing thus far sells a fairly conventional, sugar-coated drama, we’ll have to see if audiences will connect with the film which has drawn controversy with the casting of Fanning.

3 Generations tells the stirring and touching story of three generations of a family living under one roof in New York as they deal with the life-changing transformation by one that ultimately affects them all. Ray (Elle Fanning) is a teenager who has struggled with the body assigned to him at birth and is determined to start transitioning. His single mother, Maggie (Naomi Watts), must track down Ray’s biological father (Tate Donovan) to get his legal consent to allow Ray’s transition. Dolly (Susan Sarandon), Ray’s lesbian grandmother is having a hard time accepting that she now has a grandson. They must each confront their own identities and learn to embrace change and their strength as a family in order to ultimately find acceptance and understanding.
3 Generations will hit theaters on May 5th.
