With Ant-Man off the mind, Edgar Wright is now free from the shackles of Marvel (a position Patrick Wilson also wanted, it seems, as he just departed the project due to “scheduling issues”). We learned this week that the Cornetto Trilogy director was finally set to make his long-gestating project Baby Driver, but today we have another one to add to the pile.
According to Deadline, he’s teaming with Sony Pictures to enter the world of YA novel adaptations with Andrew Smith Dutton‘s Grasshopper Jungle. Fear not, however, as this one seems a bit more strange than Divergent or Twilight. As adapted by Scott Rosenberg (Con Air, Beautiful Girls), the story follows a teenager in middle America who is coming of age as he unleashes a plague that results in human-sized praying mantises.
Described as a cross between Stand By Me and Attack the Block (which Wright produced), he may not be doing Ant-Man any more, but this sounds like a much more exciting insect feature. For those that want to know more about the source material, the novel can be acquired on Amazon and one can see a book trailer below, along with a discussion by the author.
Have you read the book? Is it a good fit for Wright?
