As if we needed more proof that Hollywood is scraping the bottom of the barrel; Heat Vision brings us news that Dreamworks is looking into remaking the 1984 comedy All of Me starring Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin. The original, directed by comedy legend Carl Reiner, starred Tomlin as a billionaire who transfers her spirit into an attorney, played by Martin. As you can imagine hijinks ensue as the two different spirits try to get along in the same body.

The movie is listed as in the script development stage, with Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein already having completed a draft (they worked together most recently on The Vow, a surprise hit from earlier this year). Surprisingly enough this is the second stab at remaking this movie; New Line apparently used to own the rights and attempted to make it with Queen Latifah as the star but it never materialized. The new Dreamworks version does not have Latifah attached and for added oomph, this new version will feature the man transferring his spirit into the woman’s body.

I haven’t seen the original All of Me but the premise is the sort of thing you always hope studio execs would pass on. Body swap comedies rarely work both box office-wise and quality-wise and just thinking of all the lame duck jokes likely packed into the script makes me shiver (I just know the guy will make some sort of crude joke should he see his woman host naked). To see what you might be up against in a few short years, check out the original All of Me‘s trailer below. Can you seriously imagine a duo making a stupid premise work in the 21st century? Martin and Tomlin are on a different level than everyone.

Do you think a remake of All of Me is a good idea and if so, why did you just lie to me? I thought we were friends.
