In some recent news out of Variety, we’ve learned that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Danny DeVito will step behind the camera once again to direct the indie comedy Honeymoon with Dad.
Tapestry Films and Reel FX Creative Studios are producing the script by Scott Atkinson and Tegan West, which follows “a CPA who is dumped at the alter and forced to spend what would have been his honeymoon with his estranged, larger-than-life father.” (Although the subject matter is a bit different, I’m hoping this doesn’t draw any similarities to Adam Sandler‘s That’s My Boy.) Michael Schreiber and Peter Abrams will produce for Tapestry, with Cary Granat and Jared Mass working on account of Reel FX.
DeVito is tied up with It’s Always Sunny affairs, meaning the comedy will, most likely, commence production next year as the series is on hiatus. Although the legendary actor is known for his roles in front of the camera, DeVito got his start directing back in 1987 with the comedy, Throw Momma From the Train, which he starred in alongside Billy Crystal.
I also learned today — don’t ask me how I missed this one — that DeVito directed the much-loved 1996 family film, Matilda. After taking a few years off, he went on to direct Death to Smoochy and Duplex, the latter being his most recent helming project, aside from a TV movie and one short. In addition to Honeymoon, he also has an indie thriller, St. Sebastian, in the works.
