Peter Weir‘s The Way Back is getting the shaft this academy season. The celebrated filmmaker behind The Truman Show, Witness, Master and Commander, and many other greats has a new film, and it seems like no one knows about. It is getting released to a single LA theater on December 29th before a limited release on January 21st, 2011. It’s a shame I won’t be able to see it before I make my year-end list, but today we have the first clip.

The epic stars Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan, and Mark Strong. HeyUGuys has the exclusive clip of a dirty Farrell and you can see it below.

UPDATE: Here is a second clip via Film4 (if the video below doesn’t work, please visit the site):

Plot: A group of soldiers engineer a grueling escape from a Siberian gulag in 1942 and take a passage to India, with only one knife and a sack’s worth of food. Along the way, they meet an escaped orphan Polish teenage girl (Ronan), who joins them on their journey.

If you don’t live in LA, you may be able to see The Way Back in limited release beginning January 21st, 2011.

What do you think of the first clip?
