One of our top films to see this summer, Kris Swanberg‘s Unexpected follows Cobie Smulders as an inner-city school teacher who finds out that she’s pregnant and soon finds a student in a similar situation. Following a premiere at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, today now brings the first trailer, which does a strong job at selling the drama.

We said in our review, “The word crowdpleaser gets thrown around a lot (especially at festivals like Sundance) to the point where it can feel like a negative; something simple and easily digestible. This is a smart, sophisticated piece of storytelling that will please any and all crowds. There’s nothing negative about that.” Featuring our quote, check out the trailer below for the film also starring Anders Holm, Gail Bean, and Elizabeth McGovern.

Samantha Abbott is a dedicated and passionate teacher at an inner-city Chicago high school. Just as she is coming to terms with her school closing, Samantha faces some life-changing and unexpected news: she is pregnant. After breaking the news to her live-in boyfriend John and opinionated mother, Samantha learns that one of her most promising students, Jasmine, has landed in a similar but very different situation. As the women navigate their ambitions for the future, Samantha and Jasmine forge an unlikely friendship that will challenge their perspectives and leave a lasting impact on one another.

Unexpected opens on July 24th in theaters and VOD.
