“Filmmakers are at the core of what differentiates IMAX from everyone else, and we work with them for months…we are a partner in the process,” IMAX president Greg Foster said in a recent interview. When it comes to one of the biggest upcoming films using the format, he went on to say, “[Christopher Nolan] was designing Interstellar with IMAX in mind before one frame was shot.” As the director continues production on his sci-fi epic, today brings our first look at this design and one unprecedented aspect of how the cameras would be utilized.
Captured by a crew member whose Twitter account has now disappeared and is at the mercy of Nolan, we can see an IMAX camera outfitted to the nose of a Learjet aircraft. Much different than the usual method of bird’s eye view/establishing shots on a helicopter, we can only imagine what’s in store here. The only hint we have was previously revealed in a brief synopsis, as the film is details the toll climate change has taken on agriculture, with corn the last crop to be cultivated. The scientists embark on a journey through a worm hole into other dimensions in search of somewhere other crops can be grown. Check out the photos above and below and let us know your thoughts on this IMAX use in the comments.
Starring Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Casey Affleck, Matt Damon, Michael Caine, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow, Topher Grace and more, Interstellar lands November 7th, 2014.
