Despite a departure of Jason Segel, The Muppets 2 has managed to retain most of the crew from the first film, including writer Nick Stoller and director James Bobin. It was confirmed that another member from The Muppets is officially on board, and the update should please any fan of the original’s high-spirited soundtrack.
According to Collider — who spoke to Muppets producer Todd Lieberman — Bret McKenzie will compose new songs for the sequel. The Flight of the Conchords singer-songwriter nabbed the Best Original Song Oscar for his ballad “Man or Muppet” last year, so it makes sense that he would return to the franchise — maybe lightning will strike twice and he’ll once again have a 50/50 chance of winning. Lieberman also reaffirmed some previous updates on the project, including the addition of new Muppet characters, and the surprise casting of actor Christoph Waltz as an Interpol agent.
Described as a comedy caper set in England, the sequel should start shooting at London’s legendary Pinewood Studios in January. The film is scheduled for release on December 20, 2013.
Did you enjoy McKenzie’s work on the first Muppets movie? Are you glad to see his involvement with the sequel?
