The success of found footage films — like the Paranormal Activity series — has studios cranking out similar projects at a feverish pace. With the trend reaching the peak of its popularity, it’s only natural that those behind The Blair Witch Project, the granddaddy of the sub-genre, would return to show how scary shaky cam is done.
As a follow up to the poster we revealed recently, Apple has the trailer for Lovely Molly, the latest from Blair Witch co-director Eduardo Sanchez and producer Robert Eick — and it’s boldly promising to “redefine horror once again.” Directed by Sanchez – and co-written with Jamie Nash – the film seems like a combination of traditional narrative with only some found footage mixed in. Executive produced by Andy Jenkins, it follows lead character Molly Reynolds (Gretchen Lodge, in her feature debut), a woman haunted by terrifying events from her past.
Considering this less-than-impressive first look, I highly doubt Lovely Molly will “redefine” anything. Maybe it’s the unoriginal stock horror tropes — like blaming weird incidents on those darn neighborhood kids — or the trite crazy woman plot, but the statement comes off a bit over-confident. At best, it might deliver a nice trifle of creepy summer entertainment.
