It always seemed a little unbelievable that Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey would join forces in the name of silly fun for the Farrelly Brothers’ Three Stooges movie. Now, according to Cinema Blend, it appears they’ve said goodbye to A-listers in general and are seeking amateurs to play Larry, Moe and Curly.

Then again, it could be a sly ploy to lure some A-list comedy names back to the movie; I wouldn’t put it past those Farrelly boys. (I could see maybe Jack Black and Jason Segal in this somehow.)

What’s Playing has obtained the casting call for the project, which may signal the beginning of a global search for comic actors with the right physical traits for the iconic characters:

MOE The unquestioned leader of the Three Stooges, Moe is a numbskull who barks orders and expects unquestioned obedience from his two hapless companions, Larry and Curly. STRONG VERBAL AND PHYSICAL COMEDY SKILLS REQUIRED – Age range early 30’s to early 40’s.

LARRY An imbecile with an eccentric fringe of pullable frizzy hair, Larry is the bird-brained member of The Three Stooges, a victim of Moe’s bullying and Curly’s effervescent insanity. STRONG VERBAL AND PHYSICAL COMEDY SKILLS REQUIRED – Age range early 30’s to early 40’s.

CURLY A chubby, bullet-headed idiot whose hair never grows more than an eighth of an inch, Curly is irrepressible, outgoing, unpredictable, and utterly chaotic. STRONG VERBAL AND PHYSICAL COMEDY SKILLS REQUIRED – Age range early 30’s to early 40s.

Not that any self-respecting comedy fan would be too ignorant of the Stooges and their personalities. So keep your eyes peeled and ears open, Stooges of America! The auditions start in January!

The Three Stooges has plans to shoot in the first half of 2011.

Are you a Three Stooges fan? Are you sorry the A-listers left the project?
