No, not that Virgin Mary. Variety reports that Abigail Breslin will star in a comedy as “a teen who vows to have sex with her best male friend if they’re still virgins by the time they turn 18.”

Breslin was the scene-stealing teen star of Little Miss Sunshine and Zombieland and lent her voice talents to Rango. She is evidently quite eager to launch herself past teenager roles and into the realm of the relatively grown-up. Will her character give birth to Jesus Christ? Judging from the other work writer Beth Schacter has in the pipeline, probably not. It sounds like a touchy subject, but expect a modern sex comedy to be safe and palatable, especially with a hopefully-bankable star like Breslin.

The real question is whether or not Breslin can pull off the daunting task of front-lining a “coming-of-age story in the tradition of Sixteen Candles.” The answer is: “yeah, probably.” That girl is talented. She took her one-note role in Zombieland and made you care about that little girl. Would her character in Little Miss Sunshine have been as powerful if not for the powerful supporting performances of Paul Dano, Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Steve Carell or Best Supporting Oscar-winner Alan Arkin? Who knows? They played those roles and Breslin played hers and held her own in every single scene – a tough feat in that company.

I’m looking forward to seeing Breslin headline a film. Her Zombieland co-star Emma Stone knocked it out of the park with Easy A. Breslin is at least as talented… her knowing, worldly aura hints at much more.

What do think of Abigail Breslin? Can this project become a mainstream film?
