If Hollywood is looking for insight into the teen demographic, it looks like their go-to man is Michael Bacall. After adapting Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, he brought to screen a remake of 21 Jump Street, as well as WB’s teen party movie Project X and now we’ve got updates on his next two projects.
First up, he’s been hard at work scripting a sequel to last year’s hit comedy starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Now, at CinemaCon, Sony Pictures have formally announced 21 Jump Street 2 will be landing in theaters in 2014, but there’s no word yet if directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller can make the rumored fall 2013 start date, since they are occupied with WB’s The LEGO Movie. Expect to see most of the cast back however, and we’ll get you updates as they arrive.
Moving on to an update that may stir a few feathers, Deadline reports that Universal Pictures and Joel Silver have revealed they will be taking on a remake of John Hughes‘ 1985 film Weird Science. Setting Bacall to script, the intention is to craft this remake as an “edgier” R-rated version of the original story, which featured nerds, played by Michael Anthony Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith, who created their version of the perfect woman. While some may get up in arms regarding the development, Bacall has proven himself a sharp, funny voice in the remake department, so we’re intrigued to see what he can create. Check out the original’s trailer below.
